Family Service Association of Northeastern Pennsylvania joins Efforts to Promote Child Abuse Prevention Month

Family Service Association (FSA NEPA) is joining with individuals and organizations all over the country in recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month in April of 2024.

Child Abuse Prevention Month represents a fifty-year journey as a national and publicly recognized issue. With the passage of the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA), in 1974 by the United States Congress, legislators then went on to establish the month of April as  Child Abuse Prevention Month in 1983. Since then, both individuals and organizations have created and coordinated efforts in their communities to raise awareness and enact measures to ensure the safety of children across the country.

A central part of the mission of FSA NEPA has been the recognition and support of vulnerable individuals and communities within its seventeen-county service area. This places Child Abuse Prevention Month at the center of the organization’s focus and ongoing efforts. Programs such as the Children’s Advocacy Center for Susquehanna and Wyoming County and Family Finding work to address the issue of child abuse and neglect each day. “During this month, we need to not only learn about and recognize the signs of child abuse and neglect but also learn how to advocate for children all year long. All it takes is one person to make a difference in a child’s life- so taking the time to learn, be aware, and advocate could be the tools needed to save a child’s life. In saving that life and making a difference, generational trauma can be interrupted, finally breaking the cycle of abuse and neglect. Again- all it takes is one person to make a difference in a child’s life.” said Chief Program Officer Jessica Ives.
