PLYMOUTH, PA – On May 23rd of 2024, staff from Family Service Association of Northeastern Pennsylvania joined with volunteers from other local nonprofit organizations to lend a hand at the United Way of Wyoming Valley’s Day of Caring event.
This year, the Day of Caring was in support of the Plymouth Public Library at 107 West Main Street. Working with the library’s director, Laura Keller, volunteers assisted with tasks at the library such as cleaning, scanning books, and preparing a donation of Lego building sets to be used at the library’s children’s section.
For Family Service Association, the Day of Caring was another opportunity for the organization and its staff to recognize the need for local human services organizations to assist one another whenever possible. With the challenges facing public libraries with regard to funding, these support efforts have become more important than ever.
In 1993, the United Way established the Day of Caring as a way to support other nonprofit and charitable organizations. The event is a part of the overall United Way organization, which was founded in 1887 in Denver, Colorado, and has gone on to be one of the most recognized national charitable organizations.
The event was very successful and was reflected in the sentiments expressed by FSA NEPA staff members who participated;
“Day of Caring through United Way of Wyoming Valley is a great day to get involved in and learn about partners in our community. Plymouth Library staff and volunteers made us feel at home.” stated Marisue Sack.
“So many of our clients utilize the public library system so it was a great way for the staff at FSA of NEPA to learn more about the programs offered at the library.” added Rebecca Ciliberto.
The Day of Caring is just one of a number of events during the course of the year where FSA NEPA employees have volunteered their time. It comes at a time when

increased community engagement has been a focus of the organization.
